Work That Really Counts 3
May 1st, 2010 by ComputerBob
Three weeks ago, I became a temporary, full-time federal employee, working as a Technology Clerk for the 2010 U.S. Census.
Two weeks ago, I began working the midnight-to-8:30 AM shift.
The upside was that my third-shift co-workers were much less competitive, much more of a team, and much more laid back and fun to work with than most of their first-shift counterparts.
The downside was that my body simply refused to sleep during the day — no matter how exhausted I got.
So, for the past two weeks, I got only 2-3 hours of sleep each day.
But Friday morning’s midnight-to-8:30 AM shift was my last one.
By choice.
I could have called in and quit on Thursday afternoon, but I didn’t want to leave my supervisor without a Tech Clerk for the third shift at the last minute.
So I showed up for work that night with pizza, chips, salsa and Oreo cookies for everyone.
And turned in my letter of resignation, effective at the end of that shift.
8 1/2 hours later, I left with very good feelings and lots of hugs, handshakes and hearty congratulations.
Because Thursday afternoon, I had found out that, very soon, I’ll be starting work in a new position.
Something that all Census workers call “a real job.”
A permanent, full-time position.
In higher education.
With full benefits.
And a bright future.
Basically, it’s a position that will pay me to be ComputerBob to college students.
Which is something that I not only love, but have a lot of experience doing.
But despite the fact that I just passed an FBI background check three weeks ago, my new position won’t officially start until my new employer’s security company completes its background check — a process that can take anywhere from one day to two weeks.
So I’ll be moving from one type of work that really counts, to another type of work that really counts.
Friday night, I slept for 10 1/2 hours.
Stay tuned for more.
