Windows Update Shenanigans

June 10th, 2010 by ComputerBob

If you’re a Windows user, you’re not in complete control of your PC.

If you ever learn to use a Linux-based operating system, you’ll quickly realize that Linux gives you complete control over your PC, while Windows only allows you to perform a Microsoft-controlled subset of computer tasks.

And, even then, Windows users are only allowed to do that subset of tasks in the specific ways that Windows allows them to be done.

Windows hides much of what your PC is capable of doing from you, “for your own good.”

In contrast, Linux gives you the power to see “under the hood” and lets you do whatever you want with your PC.

Many years ago, I stopped being willing to jeopardize my computer’s security by using Windows, or trade my rights as a computer user for a little bit of Windows convenience. And I always hated the feeling that Windows owned my computer and was “allowing me to borrow it.”

So I started looking for an alternative to Windows back in 2000, and I’ve been happily using Linux full-time instead of Windows since July of 2006.

I’ve never looked back.

Here’s a brand new, perfect example of the type of Windows shenanigans that Microsoft has done scores of times with every version of Windows:

“As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update for its various toolbars, and this update came with more than just documented fixes. The update also installs an add-on for Internet Explorer and an extension for Mozilla Firefox, both without the user’s permission.”
