Windows For a Senior Citizen

What’s the best way to set up a Windows computer for a senior citizen to use?
I’m dealing with very similar issues when I set up old, donated PCs to be used, unattended, by survivors of domestic violence in their homes.
So far, I’ve been installing a locked-down configuration of a lightweight Linux distro on those PCs that I have the ability to configure with Linux, and Windows XP Professional on any PCs that I can’t get Linux to work on — usually because the “light” versions of Linux that I’ve tried so far haven’t supported certain onboard Intel video chipsets on some older PCs.
But getting back to the question of configuring a Windows computer for a senior citizen, Slashdot’s readers have a lot of suggestions to consider.
