Windows 7 Crippled For Netbooks

February 9th, 2009 by ComputerBob

Are you old enough to remember the IBM PCJr (AKA “Peanut”)?

IBM created it as a lower-cost alternative to its IBM PC, in an effort to try to capture the home and educational computing markets.

Unfortunately, Big Blue chose to artificially limit the PCjr’s capabilities, to guarantee that it wouldn’t compete against its more-powerful, more expensive sibling.

The last I heard about it was in the mid-1980’s, when IBM buried thousands of unsold PCjrs in a huge landfill somewhere.

On a related note, Microsoft has announced that it plans to artificially limit Windows 7’s capabilities on netbooks.
