University Punishes White Hat
September 14th, 2008 by ComputerBob
If you were running a university, and you learned that one of your students had hacked into the university’s network, would you punish that student?
What if the student hadn’t done anything malicious to the network?
What if the student had writen a 16-page report, telling you exactly what they had done and recommending what you could do to secure the university’s network against similar hacking attempts by others?
Not surprisingly, Slashdot’s readers have a lot to say about the fact that a Carleton University student is facing a maximum of ten years in prison if he is convicted of hacking into that university’s network.
By punishing “white hat” behavior, do universities inadvertedly convert students into black hats? What do you think? Let us know by posting your reply, below.
