Today Is The Day
August 29th, 2010 by ComputerBob
Today is the day that my father died, five years ago.
Today is the day that I had my heart attack, six years ago.
Today is the day that my wife left me, eight years ago.
Today is the day that my best friend passed away, nine years ago.
Today is the day that I had to have my favorite dog put to sleep, ten years ago.
Today is the day that I was downsized out of the job that I loved, twelve years ago.
Today is the day that I had my first back surgery, fifteen years ago.
Today is the day that I was in a horrible car accident, twenty years ago.
Today is the day that my grandmother died, thirty years ago.
We all experience many memorable occasions in our lives.
Some good — some painful.
But most of us tend to write only the painful ones on our calendars.
Hardly anyone documents the fact that, twenty years ago today, they got that plum job that they really wanted.
Or that nineteen years ago today, they bought their dream home.
Or that four years ago today, they finally got their cholesterol levels under control.
Nope.
We mostly collect the deaths, disappointments and traumas of our lives.
And the longer we live, the more of them we collect.
Little daggers, lurking on our calendars.
If you live long enough, you may find that nearly every day of the year brings its own painful memories.
And you end up with a “Pain-A-Day” calendar.
But, if you really think about it, you can choose to make all of those painful memories remind you that you have survived and learned from many difficult challenges that have forged you into the stronger, wiser and more sensitive person that you are today.
And you can start to fill your calendar with all of your life’s joys, blessings and accomplishments.
One year from today could be the one-year anniversary of when you started to do that.
It’s your choice.
You can do it.
Today is the day.
