The Unix Toolbox

June 9th, 2010 by ComputerBob

As I’ve mentioned many times before, I’ve been using Linux full-time instead of Windows since July of 2006.

Since Linux-based operating systems are basically open-source versions of the proprietary Unix operating system, many things work the same way in Linux as they do in Unix.

Although a lot of people think of Linux as being “for geeks only,” and imagine that Linux users spend their days typing “DOS commands” onto a black text-based command-line screen, I generally do all of my work on my three Linux computers in the user-friendly GUI (which looks a lot like Windows) — and only rarely do I have to resort to entering a command or two at the Linux command line.

But when I do have to enter a command, I’m really happy to have access to references like The Unix Toolbox, a site whose commands apply to both Unix and Linux systems.

Also, if you’d like to try out some Unix/Linux commands on a system other than your own, the same people that provide the Unix Toolbox also provide an online, interactive command prompt.

Here’s what some users at the Debian Linux User Forums have to say about the Unix Toolbox.

Thanks to regular reader MALsPa for bringing this one to my attention.
