The Truth About Motivation

June 6th, 2010 by ComputerBob

Besides the need for survival, what motivates people to work?

Anyone who knows me, knows that money has never motivated me.

If earning a lot of money had been important to me, I wouldn’t have spent three years doing full-time, volunteer work for charitable organizations; and spent thousands of additional hours helping other charities, as well as individuals and families in crisis.

And I certainly wouldn’t have spent over 15,000 hours, and thousands of dollars of my own money, working on this Web site — and thousands more hours helping hundreds of people with their computer problems and questions.

I also wouldn’t have happily taken a 65% pay cut when I left full-time computer consulting to start teaching at a community college.

So, if money doesn’t motivate me, then what does?

The same three things that really motivate many other people, according to an excellent video: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us.

I feel incredibly blessed that my new job provides me with all three of those things.

Plus, the students, faculty and staff all show me a lot of appreciation.

And I earn a comfortable amount of money.
