The Neighbors
July 30th, 2009 by ComputerBob
Regular readers of this Journal know that I’ve said it many times before: Mike and Annamarie next door are our good friends and the best neighbors that my wife and I have ever had — and we’ve lived nearly 35 different places and had many, many neighbors over the years!
When house-hunting, most people look for a house that meets their needs, at a price that they can afford, in an area that seems like a good area.
Similarly, when building a new house, most people look for a piece of property that is the right size, at an affordable price, in a good location.
They usually don’t go door-to-door to interview the neighbors.
But good neighbors can make a bad neighborhood feel like home, and bad neighbors can make paradise feel like hell.
So if you’re going to commit to living somewhere for a long time, wouldn’t it make sense to meet your potential neighbors beforehand, to try to strike up some friendships and see if there are any “red flags?”
That way you could try to avoid the nightmare of finding a perfect, scenic, waterfront location for your new home, filling out all of the paperwork, paying for all of the plans, hiring a contractor, getting all of the permits, arranging to have all of the utilities run out to the location, making all of the financial commitments — and then, after all of that, realizing that you’re not going to get along with the neighbors.
