The Internet In 2020?

Today’s Internet is filled with spam, phishing sites, malware and many other undesirable things.
I’ve seen it described as “the digital wild west” — referring to a time in U.S. history when criminals could do their dirty deeds with little danger of being caught or prosecuted by the law.
Experts agree that those problems exist because the current Internet was designed for a completely different purpose — not to be the “public utility” that it has become.
But now comes word of what might be some good news: Researchers are working to develop a completely new Internet to replace the current one. “Their goal is audacious: To create an Internet without so many security breaches, with better trust and built-in identity management… that’s more reliable, higher performing and better able to manage exabytes of content… that extends connectivity to the most remote regions of the world, perhaps to other planets. “
That sounds good to me. But are their downsides to that idea? As usual, Slashdot’s readers have a lot to say about the issue.
