The Internet Changes Everything

September 5th, 2009 by ComputerBob

Well, maybe not everything, but if you’re reading this, the Internet has changed your life.

Probably mostly for the better. But it might have also made some things worse.

For one thing, along with its many, many online sources of information, the Internet has many, many sources of misinformation. Nowadays, anyone can publish their own credible-looking headlines, and a lot of people will believe them, no matter how ridiculous or wrong they are. (If you don’t get it right away, just keep reading it out loud to yourself until you do.)

And even though many people choose not to think about it, the more confidential information we each choose to trust to online sources, the more we put ourselves at risk of having someone steal and exploit that information.

Plus anyone who has spent any time in Internet chat rooms or online forums knows that civility is often the first casualty of anonymity.

As intelligent consumers of the Internet, I think we would be wise to keep a critical eye open, not only for the many positive things that the Internet has given us, but also for the many things that it is destroying.
