The D-Drive

May 15th, 2010 by ComputerBob

If someone were to ask me to define the holy grail of computer data storage, I would probably say that it would be silent, energy-efficient, electronic storage, running at the speed of light, with no moving parts, probably at the molecular — or even atomic — level.

I remember reading that a university was working to develop atomic-level data storage back around 1997 or 1998. To demonstrate the scale of the atomic level of storage, they said that a week’s worth of 24-hour full-motion video and audio would only require abouit one square inch of space on the surface of the atomic storage media.

Now, with the introduction of the D-Drive, those who understand vehicle transmissions are wondering it may be the holy grail of infinitely variable transmissions.

It’s fascinating to watch it in action, and I’ve always considered myself to be a pretty mechanically minded person, but if you can understand how the D-Drive works, your mechanical skills are more advanced than mine.
