The Alphabet Of Computing

November 9th, 2009 by ComputerBob

When I was a kid, I loved to read. Books, magazines, comic books. Science fiction, mysteries, comedy, short stories, adventure, biographies, fiction, non-fiction — I was a voracious, literary omnivore.

Often, I would check out up to 15 books at a time at my local library, strap them to my bicycle, and ride them back to my house, 2-1/2 miles away.

And then, once a year, our church would have its annual rummage sale, which meant that I’d get a whole bunch of free, leftover books at the end of the sale. That’s how I got all of my Hardy Boys and Tom Swift books. I wish I still had them.

But some of my favorites were the old paperback Ripley’s Believe It Or Not books, filled with drawings and facts about weird, fascinating and amazing people, places and things from all over the world. Each time I started reading one of those books, I couldn’t put it down until I finished it.

I highly recommend Believe It Or Not books because I think they’re wonderful educational tools for children, for a number of reasons:

  • Because they’re so interesting and entertaining, they encourage children to read.
  • They expand children’s imaginations by teaching them a lot about the mysteries of the world.
  • They expand children’s vocabularies. I still remember that, in order to understand a lot of Ripley’s stories, I had to look up words in the dictionary and figure out the meaning of other words from the context.

To me, The Alphabet of Computing has the same “edutainment” feeling as the old Believe It Or Not books.

See if you feel the same way.
