Breathtaking Photos

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

I worked as a photographer a couple of times, a few decades ago.

And, later, as a television producer/director for 3-4 years.

So I have a really good eye for quality photography and videography.

I’ve used both cheap and expensive cameras.

But I understand a fact that all artists know from experience: [more...]

Mythbusters Have A Ball

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

I don’t get that cable channel, so I’ve never seen the TV show, Mythbusters.

But I occasionally read stories about it, describing how the show’s hosts do tests to either confirm or disprove popular myths and old-wives’ tales.

From what I’ve seen, I think it would be really fun to work on that type of show; getting paid to entertain and educate people by making messes and having fun. [more...]

A Sweet Scam

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

I’ll give you some clues, and you try to guess the product that I’m thinking about:

  • It’s a thick, sticky, golden liquid
  • It tastes very sweet
  • Insects make it

Of course you guessed “honey.”

Everyone knows what honey is.

Bud Finds His Forever Home

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Tonight, as I type this, it has been exactly five months since I rescued Bud.

He happily lived in our garage for more than two months, sleeping in a large greyhound-sized dog crate that we borrowed from our next-door neighbors — along with their window air-conditioner, which kept him comfortable during the hot, humid Sunshine State summer.

But, on this past Labor Day weekend, we gave the crate back. [more...]

Eight Gadgets That Lie To You

Monday, November 28th, 2011

I’ll bet that, one hundred years ago, the highest-tech gadget that most families could afford was a pocket watch.

And that item was probably reserved for only the male head of the household.

In contrast, nowadays, many grade-school children have their own cell phones.

From game machines to laptop computers to [more...]

You’ve Got Something In Your Eye

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

It’s like a scene from a futuristic movie.

You’re having a romantic dinner with your significant other.

You lean across the table…

gaze lovingly into their eyes…

but, along with the look of love, you suddenly notice a [more...]

The Past Is Present

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

If you and 25 of your closest friends each put a childhood photo of yourselves on a table and mixed them all up, would everyone recognize you from your old photo?

I’m sure that my friends would easily be able to pick me out of such a photo lineup.

That’s because — except for a little wear and tear — I still have the same face that I had when I was a kid — which explains why [more...]

Tiny Glitches, Huge Disasters

Monday, November 14th, 2011

“To err is human — to really mess things up requires a computer.”

That’s a popular old saying.

But it’s usually not a computer’s fault when something gets really messed up.

It’s almost always the fault of a computer programmer or computer user.

Because, computers are [more...]
