Linux Tech Talk 5

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Two days ago, I installed Debian Squeeze onto my new 64-bit PC, using ext4 partitions, KDE4 and grub2.

Two nights ago, I was up until 3:00 AM, thanks to Debian Squeeze’s version of KDE4.

My experience may surprise you. It certainly surprised me. [more...]

This short announcement is to let you know that I plan to replace this announcement with today’s Journal post some time this evening, after I’ve taken a little nap.

Yesterday, I installed Debian Squeeze onto my new PC, using ext4 partitions, KDE4 and grub2.

Last night, I was up until 3:00 AM, thanks to [more...]

Linux Tech Talk 2

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Regular readers of this Journal know that I’ve enjoyed the freedom, power and security of using Linux full-time instead of Windows since July of 2006.

And that I’ve been happily using Debian Linux since December of 2007.

Specifically, I use the Debian “Squeeze” (Testing) branch with the [more...]

Windows Security Baseline

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Regular readers of this Journal know that I’ve been happily using LInux instead of Windows since July of 2006. Linux is fast, secure, stable, easy to use, and infinitely configurable. Like most Linux “distros,” the Debian Linux that I use is completely free and comes with hundreds of free applications, tools, utilities, libraries, etc., as well as free access to [more...]

Linux Tech Talk

Friday, August 14th, 2009

If you’re not a Linux geek, you probably won’t understand or care about this particular Journal post, so just skip it and don’t feel guilty.

I’ve been using Debian Squeeze (the Debian Testing branch) for about 6 months; ever since a couple of weeks after it was first released. Back when [more...]

Iceweasel To Firefox, Icedove To Thunderbird

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

By now, most people know that Mozilla recently released Firefox 3.5, the latest version of their free and open source web browser. The new Firefox has many new features, and is reportedly noticeably faster than even the 3.0.x version that I have been using, as well as many times faster than earlier versions of that browser. [more...]

Flash Video On My Web Pages

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Regular readers of this Journal know that, in the past, I’ve shot short videos with my Canon PowerShot A75 digital camera, and then tried to find a way to display them on a web site.

Specifially, because the Canon shoots its videos in AVI format, I wanted to convert them to smaller Flash videos in Linux and then [more...]

Squeeze Gets Its Name

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

If you’re a Debian Linux user, and if you recently upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze, and if you’ve wondered why your system still kept telling you that you were using “lenny/sid”, rest assured that today’s upgrade of “base-files” (from version 5 to version 5.0) fixes that extremely minor annoyance. [more...]
