Squeeze Gets Its Name
March 4th, 2009 by ComputerBob
If you’re a Debian Linux user, and if you recently upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze, and if you’ve wondered why your system still kept telling you that you were using “lenny/sid”, rest assured that today’s upgrade of “base-files” (from version 5 to version 5.0) fixes that extremely minor annoyance.
The latest version of /etc/debian_version correctly reports that Testing/Squeeze systems are running “squeeze/sid”. You can confirm that by viewing /etc/debian_version (it’s just one line of text).
Or, if you’re using the KDE desktop environment, after you’ve booted up to your KDE desktop, press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to drop into a terminal, where you can view the last of your system’s most recent boot messages. The very last message will confirm that you’re running “squeeze/sid”. To get back to your KDE desktop afterward, press Ctrl-Alt-F7. Those same keystrokes may also work if you’re using the GNOME desktop environment, but I don’t use GNOME, so I don’t know that for sure.
