Smart Mistakes

June 21st, 2010 by ComputerBob

Years ago, whenever one of my college computer students asked me how many computer courses I’ve taken in my lifetime, I’d always tell them that I’ve only taken two: BASIC and FORTRAN (programming languages), back in 1982.

Then I’d add, “Most of what I know about computers, I learned from trial and error. Mostly error.”

And now, an increasing number of psychologists and neuroscientists are recognizing that my style of learning is a good one: “The more scientists understand about cognitive functioning, the more it becomes clear that our capacity to err is utterly inextricable from what makes the human brain so swift, adaptable, and intelligent.”
