Seeing Is Believing

July 24th, 2008 by ComputerBob

I just got back from my annual eye exam. Actually, this year’s exam happened 15 months after last year’s because the eye doctor’s office forgot to send me a reminder post card 3 months ago, so I finally stopped in last week and asked, “Isn’t it past time for my annual appointment?”

Just like last year, I was very relieved to learn that my diabetes hasn’t affected my eyes at all. They’re still perfectly healthy.

Just like the rest of me — which wasn’t the case at last year’s eye exam.

Regular readers of this Journal know that in February of last year, I suffered a stroke that put the whole left side of my body to sleep. And that, since then, I lost over 100 pounds and brought my bad cholesterol, my A1c blood glucose reading and my blood pressure all way, way down to very, very healthy levels. In fact, my A1c is so low that it would be a very healthy level for someone who doesn’t even have diabetes. My doctor keeps urging me to write a book about how I did it.

For the past several months, I’ve weighed even less than I did as a normal-weight, athletic-looking kid in high school. And despite the stroke, I’m probably even healthier now than I was back in high school, because now I eat right and I’m in shape. And I’m not in shape because I’m a high school kid who can eat whatever he wants and still look good, but because I’ve chosen to do the work that it takes to get back into shape and stay there.

If you or someone you care about would like to learn more about how I “came back” from my stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, take a look at My Previous Life Is Over and How I Lost More Than 100 Pounds.
