Prohibiting Free Speech? 3
April 3rd, 2010 by ComputerBob
American know that we have a right called “freedom of speech.”
But we also know that our freedom has limits.
For example, it’s pretty well-known that freedom of speech doesn’t give you the right to shout “Fire!” in a crowded theater (unless there really is a fire).
While that example may be obvious, others are not.
Take for example, the relatively new phenomenon of “cyberbullying.”
Despite a huge public outcry over a few instances of cyberbullying that have reportedly resulted in the deaths of its victims, the law hasn’t been clear as to whether cyberbullying should be considered protected free speech or a hate crime, defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
Fortunately, it appears that the legal precedent is becoming clearer.
