Outsourcing Government Functions

I’ve discussed it several times, so regular readers of this Journal know that I’ve never had much good to say about “cloud computing.” In fact, I’ve always expressed serious concerns that computer users seem to be unwisely eager to trade their private data’s security, access, privacy and control for a little convenience.
And I’m even more strongly against the idea of government agencies, educational institutions, health care providers and financial services providers storing people’s confidential data on the cloud.
But here’s another threat to consider — and it may turn out to be be even bigger than the others: government agencies outsourcing their work to private companies.
A 17-year veteran of information technology organizations within the Missouri state government gives several examples of it and says, “…I have increasingly come to the conclusion that we are putting our state’s operations at risk and compromising the trust of the people of our state by outsourcing core government functions…”
