Our Jade Anniversary

May 3rd, 2010 by ComputerBob

Today is my wife’s and my Jade Anniversary.

You didn’t realize that I was that old, did you?

Neither did I.

One day we’re teenagers in love, and just a little while later, we’ve been married for 12,783 days.

Hard to believe.

Until I look back at everything that we’ve been through together.

Later this week, when we go out for dinner to celebrate, I’m going to give my wife this sterling silver necklace with a heart made of real Chinese jade:

My wife's new jade heart necklace.

But please don’t tell her — it’s a surprise.

She normally doesn’t wear much jewelry except the 5-diamond ring that I gave her for our Platinum Anniversary.

But I hope that she’ll do me the honor of wearing her new necklace — at least on special occasions — because she deserves it.

We were really poor kids back on our wedding day.

Instead of an expensive wedding dress, she wore a light-cream-colored peasant dress that we bought at a local mall.

We held our wedding and its reception in the fellowship hall of the church where she had grown up.

With a potluck dinner instead of a caterer.

Our only wedding cake was a sheet cake that someone happened to bring to the potluck.

And our only wedding photograph is a small, black-and-white closeup that a friend took of the two of us hugging after the ceremony.

But you know, she’s been my best friend since we were teenagers.

She’s been at the heart of nearly every joyful moment I’ve experienced as an adult.

And she’s willingly gone through hell with me many, many times.

My wife has truly been my partner in faith through thick and thin.

She’s been the biggest blessing of my entire life.

And though I really couldn’t even imagine that it could even be possible all those years ago,

I actually do love her much, much more now than I did on our wedding day.
