Obsolete Occupations

The Sunshine State is a huge peninsula that juts out from the southeast United States into both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.
I live a few minutes from the coast, in an area that’s filled with picturesque ponds, lakes and streams.
So I’m used to being surrounded by water.
And — until recently — several traffic-halting drawbridges.
Fortunately, in the past few years, the powers-that-be have wisely replaced many of the old drawbridges with taller, one-piece bridges.
As far as I can tell, the only downside to that is that there are fewer jobs for drawbridge operators.
I can live with that.
I can also see several other jobs that are becoming obsolete.
Toll collector.
Utility company meter reader.
Librarian — at least in the sense of a traditional librarian’s duties.
The constant march of technological progress leaves a constant wake of obsolescence.
Making it harder and harder to find a job that is going to remain relevant at least as long as you do.
Because sometimes, it only takes a few years for a cutting-edge career to become an obsolete occupation.
