No One Ever Called Me That Before
June 20th, 2008 by ComputerBob
Regular readers of this Journal know that, after I suffered a stroke that put the entire left side of my body to sleep last year, I lost more than 100 pounds and took control of my health.
Yesterday, as I was standing on the side of the street in front of our house, checking our mailbox for new mail, a neighbor woman from around the corner came jogging by, just like she does every day. As she passed me, she called out, “Hey, Slim!”
Like many people, I’ve been called many different things over the years. My least favorite was “big guy.” I’m not a “big” guy — I’m actually a little shorter than the average male in the U.S. To me, calling someone “big guy” is just a socially acceptable way of calling them “fat guy.” For years, people called me “big guy.” I know they were tying to be kind, but it stung a little bit each time they did it.
To be perfectly honest, though, I guess I deserved it.
But yesterday was the first and only time in my life that anyone has ever called me “Slim.”
And I really liked it.
