NFL = Higher Risk For Dementia

September 30th, 2009 by ComputerBob

The ink is barely dry on the New York Times’ story about it, but the controversy has already begun.

We’re talking about football. American football — the most popular spectator sport in the United States.

If you’re a football player, or the parent or loved one of a football player, this news is going to affect you.

After years of denying the results of external studies that showed significant cognitive decline among National Football League players, the NFL finally commissioned its own study.

And, as a result, the NFL has now admitted that “Alzheimer’s disease or similar memory-related diseases appear to have been diagnosed in the league’s former players vastly more often than in the national population — including a rate of 19 times the normal rate for men ages 30 through 49.”
