My Shopping List

January 10th, 2010 by ComputerBob

More than ten years ago, up in the Frostbite State, my wife and I used to shop at a Cub Foods store that had 22 double-length aisles filled with groceries.

The selection was tremendous and the prices were great, but the store was so huge that it always took a long time to find everything that we were looking for.

So, way back then, I created a spreadsheet checklist of the 164 items that we bought most often, arranged in the order of which aisle each item was in.

We kept a printout of that list in our kitchen, and checked off items as we ran low on them.

Then we’d take that list to the store, so we’d know exactly which aisles we needed to go to, and what we needed to get in each one.

It chopped our shopping time down to a fraction of what it had been.

I even put it on this Web site back then, so that several of my college students who shopped at the same store could download it and customize it to their needs.

My wife and I have lived in the Sunshine State for the past 6 years, but I never took the time to create that type of shopping list for the Publix grocery store that’s a mile west of our house, where we usually shop.

But then, without warning, at 7:00 PM on Christmas Eve a couple of weeks ago, that Publix store closed.

Permanently.

After 55 years in business.

So we had to find a new place to shop.

We ended up choosing a newer-but-smaller Publix store that’s a mile north of our house.

And because its 15 aisles and 5 departments are arranged completely differently than the Publix that we’ve been used to for the past several years, I decided to create a spreadsheet shopping list for it.

So yesterday afternoon, I found and edited our old Cub Foods shopping list spreadsheet, to remove the items that we no longer buy and to add some additional items that we buy now.

I had to ask my wife what we used to buy that was called “canned meat.” She couldn’t remember it either.

Then I took a printout of that draft list to our new Publix store and walked up and down every aisle, writing each item’s aisle number next to it and adding a few items that I saw on the shelves that I hadn’t thought of when I had created the draft.

When I got home, I opened the spreadsheet, added the new items, added the aisle numbers, rearranged the items so that the aisles would be in order, shaded the backgound behind the even-number aisles, left a blank space between each aisle, and put a mark next to each item that I know we can buy cheaper at either WalMart or Sam’s Club.

It took me awhile and several test prints to finally get the text to all fit into the columns and the columns to all fit onto the page, but when I finished, I had a new one-page shopping list spreadsheet of the 133 items that we buy most often, arranged in the order of their aisle numbers.

With plenty of space to write in the names of additional items, or to add items to the spreadsheet itself.

Our new grocery list is hanging on our refrigerator door.

And “skim milk” is already checked.

I was trying to create a spreadsheet for my own shopping trips, but I was having trouble. So, i did a search for publix shopping spreadsheet. Your link popped up. I know that it isn’t a spreadsheet, but your list sounds great and easier for me to shop with. I’d appreciate it if you would e-mail it to me… please? Thank you!

    Hi,
I know you are probably already so tired of hearing this, but I really would appreciate the Publix aisle layout list. I am trying to organize my coupon folder, and it would be so convenient to organize it according to the aisles, since I work my way out from one side of the store to other (like most of the people, I assume :) ) A huge thanks ahead of hand, if you could do this for me!

  28. ComputerBob Says:

I just sent it to you, too. You’re very welcome.

I’m not tired of hearing that people want it — I’m just sort of bewildered. ;)

  29. Teresa Says:

Bob I would love to have your list as well.
And the sudden craze may have something to do with the fact people need to save time and money these days.
I know I need to be in and out of the store quickly. 3 kids means more items in the cart that i dont need. Thanks

  39. Viera Says:

I also would appreciate your Publix aisle layout list, I too am starting couponing and this will help with organization. One silly question, would you happen to know how to create a price list? I am researching how to do this but I am not having much luck since they are based on comparison with multiple stores and I would like to stick with this particular Publix store only. Thank you ever so much.

  40. ComputerBob Says:

I just sent it to you, too. I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking for about how to create a price list, but when I made my shopping list, I walked up and down every aisle with a notebook and a pen, writing down the name and aisle number of every item that we normally buy. I could have turned it into a price list if I had written down each item’s price, too.

  41. Tasha Says:

Hello! I was checking to see if you can share your spreadsheet with me as well? It sounds like you put alot of hard work into creating it! Its taking every Ive got just to make a list…I can’t imagine having to come up with a spread sheet to organize it by isle. Maybe yours will help me!
    Thank you,
    Tasha

  81. janna kritz Says:

FANTASTIC!!! I have been trying to organize my food shopping in a similar fashion but YOUR IDEAS ARE FAR BEYOND ANYTHING I EVER CONSIDERED. PLEASE…PLEASE…send me your spreadsheet. Do you have one for Cub? [I was unclear what store[s] you have one for]. Otherwise, any grocery store layout would be just fine. They all tend to have similarities in their layouts.

I am soooo happy to come across your site.

I am also trying to do the same with Menards (hardware store).

I am excited to hear back from you. And my’thank you’s” ahead of time….You are a very smart & organized man!

    Regards,
    janna kritz.
