Microsoft Security Essentials
September 30th, 2009 by ComputerBob
It’s not Microsoft’s first effort at releasing a Windows security application, but it may be the company’s best effort so far.
Or it may be a useless piece of junk that’s going to put users at risk by giving them a false sense of security.
Depending on who you ask.
Microsoft has released Microsoft Security Essentials, an application for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
Ars Tecnica gives it a thumbs-up.
But two of Microsoft’s competitors have criticized it, with one calling it a “poor product.”
As a full-time Linux user, I don’t have to run a slew of security applications to protect my PC, so I don’t have a dog in this race. But in a case like this one, I tend to believe (apparently) independent reviews like Ars Tecnica’s over the words of those who make competing products.
I suppose that time will tell which side is telling the truth and which side has a vested interest in promoting their opinion.
Personally, I won’t be surprised, no matter how it turns out.
