Max Goes For A Ride

Anyone who’s spent much time visiting this site knows that my wife and I really, really love our pets.
Mini was always happy and excited to go for a ride in the car, but then she was terrified the entire time. I guess it was kind of a scary thrill for her — like a roller coaster ride.
In contrast, Max has always enjoyed every single minute of every single car ride. In fact, twice in the past, he was a perfect traveling companion when I took him with me on 900-mile round trips.
Lately, my wife and I have been taking Max with us every time we go out to do errands. And, even on days that we don’t have to go out for anything in particular, we try to make time to take him for a ride, even if it’s just a 2 mile drive around the neighborhood — because he just loves it so much, and we love him so much.
He’s so smart and perceptive that he usually knows that we’re getting ready to take him for a ride in the car, long before we say anything at all to him — like when he sees me put on my shoes, sees my wife brushing her hair, or hears my keys jingle as I take them off of the hook by the door to the garage. He’ll start quickly looking back and forth between us expectantly; then sitting and holding up one paw as if to say, “Please!” Then, as soon as one of us even starts to ask him, “Hey, Max, do you wanna go for a ride in the car?,” as soon as we get to “do you,” he starts galloping back and forth across the living room at full speed, then excitedly dragging himself along on his belly, doing his “Commando of Love” stretch, with his tiny back “chicken legs” dragging along behind him.
Once we’re in the car, he lays in a foam doggie bed on my wife’s lap, where he can look out the windshield and the passenger side window. We take along a small bowl and a bottle of water, in case he gets thirsty, along with his leash, in case we either stop at a park, or he lets us know that he needs to “go out.”
Last month, we took him along every time we went out to look at Christmas lights. One night, we drove from neighborhood to neighborhood for over 2 hours, and he spent the whole time studying every display along with us.
Wherever we go, Max lays in his little bed of honor.
And because we love him so much, we let him think that he’s the Assistant Co-Pilot.
But fans of the TV sitcom The Office know that his official job title is Assistant to the Co-Pilot.
