Ma.gnolia Data Is Gone

February 21st, 2009 by ComputerBob

It seems that every few weeks, we learn about another security breach or loss of services at another online service that many people count on every day.

Regular readers of this Journal know that, for many security, access and privacy issues, I never trust my important and private data to online services like GMail or Google Apps.

Instead, I choose to do my word processing, email and other applications right on my own PC, where I can always access them, and where I personally safeguard their security.

Here’s another example of an online service that recently lost all of its customers’ data. Its site is currently down, and I haven’t been able to find any information about how many users it has, but from other indications, it looks like there are probably hundreds of thousands of them.

I wonder how many of those users realized when they signed up for that service that they were trusting their data and privacy to what was essentially a one-man operation.

Live and learn, I guess.
