Looking For Something? 4

March 3rd, 2009 by ComputerBob

Ever since last July, I’ve been using a WordPress search plugin called wpsearch to power this Journal’s search box.

Unfortunately, ever since the beginning, wpsearch has had a few bugs that have caused continuing problems for its users, including one that causes it to lose the search results of posts that are edited after they’re posted.

I was the first one to bring that particular problem to the attention of Kenny Katzgrau, wpsearch’s creator. Kenny and I corresponded several times about wpsearch issues and he spent a lot of time trying to kill the bugs.

Because of his sincere efforts to fix wpsearch, I continued to use wpsearch on this site, even though its bugs forced me to reindex its entire search index every few days in order to keep it working correctly.

But now it’s been several months since Kenny released any bug-fixes, and more than 3 months since he posted a progress update on his web site, so last night, I posted a new comment there, asking him what’s going on.

Within a couple of hours, he wrote back to me by email, thanking me for my support and stating the following, which affects all wpsearch users:

“It’s has been a very long time. I apologize for the long periods of little activity on the project. I’m in my last semester of school, and CodeFury has taken a back seat (really, it has been hectic). On top of that, I have had no luck figuring out what has been causing the error. I’ve tried nearly everything, and I have settled on the fact that the Zend Lucene library might be the problem.

For now, I’d say the search plugin has little chance of being revived, unless Zend fixes the issue. If you find another plugin that suits you, please use it.”

I wrote back to thank him for his efforts and to encourage him to post a new update on his web site, to let his other users know what’s going on with wpsearch.

I wish Kenny all the best in his future as I start looking for a fast, lightweight WordPress search plugin to replace wpsearch.

Any recommendations?
