Linux Elitism, FUD And Truth
January 24th, 2009 by ComputerBob
Regular readers of this Journal know that I’ve been very happily using Linux full-time instead of Windows since July, 2006.
For a few years before that, I tried several different Linux distros, but I couldn’t find one that met my computing needs while being easy enough to install that it also met my level of technical and problem-solving skills. My now-6-year-old rant, Review: Mandrake Linux 9.0 is a perfect example of the frustrating experiences that I had with Linux back in those days.
My computing life changed forever when Linux’s ease of installation and my technical skills finally intersected in 2006.
Back in the dark ages of my pre-Linux experience, I was guilty of saying things like, “I’ll be ready for Linux when Linux is ready for me.” That was my way of saying that Linux and its online support sources were far from friendly enough for me to figure out how to install and configure it.
But now, as a full-time Linux user, I hate to see articles that proclaim that “Linux isn’t ready for the desktop” because I know from first-hand experience that it is.
At least it’s been ready for MY desktop for the past 2 1/2 years.
Maybe Linux isn’t ready for your desktop.
Or maybe Linux IS ready for your desktop, but you’re simply not ready for Linux.
And maybe you will never be ready for Linux.
Or maybe you are ready for Linux, but you just don’t realize it.
If you’ve wondered about those issues, you should read Joe Sixpack Must Die, and the thoughtful readers’ comments that follow it.
