Learning From Others
June 22nd, 2010 by ComputerBob
I know I’m not the first person to ever think of it, but years ago, I reached a valuable conclusion about life: “A smart person learns from their mistakes. A wise person learns from others’ mistakes.”
But hardly anyone I know intentionally tries to learn from others’ mistakes. In fact, whenever I’ve brought up the topic, nearly everyone I’ve spoken with has told me, “I need to make my own mistakes.”
I suppose there are some advantages to that, too, like the fact that learning from making your own mistakes and thinking for yourself often ends up being much more costly — and thus possibly more memorable — than learning from others’ mistakes.
And if we think for ourselves and learn by making our own mistakes, we often end up learning different lessons than what others intended for us to learn.
