It’s All In Your Head

If you don’t count the summer session that I took 2 doctoral-level statistics courses at the same time, the most interesting semester of my undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs was probably the one in which I took both psychology and sociology courses.
The psychology professor would describe to us how our behavior is mostly determined by whatever is going on in our individual brains.
The sociology professor would describe to us how our behavior is mostly determined by how society has socialized us.
I remember that I had to keep reminding myself which course I was in whenever it was time to take a test. “OK, this is sociology, so the professor’s going to want me to say…”
If you’ve taken similar courses, you’ve probably heard of some of these, but here’s an interesting page that summarizes the results of what one site calls The Ten Most Revealing Psych Experiments.
How many of them do you think should actually be called “Sociology Experiments?”
I think the truth is that neither psychology nor sociology tells the whole story.
Yes, our behavior is mostly determined by what goes on in our brains.
But society is in our brains.
