It’ll Be Our Little Secret

I don’t often go to garage sales, but this one was just a few blocks away, and I was driving by, so I stopped in.
I’m glad I did, because after I looked over the merchandise that was arranged on tables up and down the curved driveway, I ended up buying a nice NEC 15″ LCD monitor for my home office’s file server for only $10.
While I was there, a woman came walking up with a small, very enthusiastic black dog that ran right up to me to get some love.
Babies and dogs always recognize people who love them.
As I petted her, her owner explained that she had gotten her from the local dachshund rescue organization a couple of years ago.
It’s true that her little dog’s face looked very familiar. And she had the exact same short, sleek coat with exactly the same black-and-tan coloring as Max’s.
And her little face and eyes looked a lot like his.
But her head was much smaller, and her snout was shorter and narrower than Max’s.
And her ears stood up.
And she had long legs.
And a bobbed tail — one of those little thumbs that protrudes up a couple of inches.
When I commented that her dog’s legs were much longer than a dachshund’s, she admitted that it must be some sort of dachshund mixed-breed.
I could tell that she really, really loves her sweet little “dachshund-mix.”
So I didn’t have the heart to tell her that it’s actually a purebred miniature pinscher.
