In Gaudy Colors

Chances are, you’ve seen many photographs of them.
You may have even seen some of them in person.
Their completely bleached-out skin and lack of eyeballs give them a very unique look.
They’re the stone sculptures of ancient Rome and Greece.
And their look has been copied by many sculptors for many centuries — including those who sculpted busts of George Washington and many of the other founding fathers of the United States.
But it turns out that the bleached-out look wasn’t the way that the original Roman and Greek sculptors intended their works to be seen.
Nope — researchers believe that they were originally painted in gaudy colors.
