How To Be A Computer Expert

August 24th, 2009 by ComputerBob

I’m relatively intelligent, I have a pretty logical personality, and I have a lot of patience, so I’ve often been able to figure out how to make broken things work by following logical troubleshooting steps, as Mister Destructo will confirm.

When I taught college computer courses, every once in awhile, a student who was especially impressed by my knowledge and experience would say something like, “You must have taken a ton of computer courses.”

I’d tell them that I have taken a total of 2 computer courses in my life, and they were both programming couirses (BASIC and FORTRAN). And most of what I know about computers, I learned through trial and error — mostly error.

So, instead of concentrating on only the skills that were in their textbooks, I always tried to also teach my students how to troubleshoot problems that might happen while they’re working on their computers. I’d tell them, “When your boss needs an important spreadsheet in 30 minutes, nobody’s going to feel sorry for you that Excel’s menus don’t look the way they did in your textbook.”

If you’re trying to figure out a problem, or trying to teach someone else how to think logically, there’s a lot of truth in this funny comic that describes a set of simple, logical troubleshooting steps.
