How Onions Make Us Cry

Everyone knows that if you cut up an onion, it will make you cry.
Veteran chefs also know that if you fill a container with cold water and cut up an onion underwater, it won’t make you cry.
But most people who know that tip mistakenly believe that it works because the water prevents the onion’s irritating sulphur fumes from reaching your eyes.
The truth is that it works because the water prevents you from hearing the onion.
