How I Made Firefox Run Incredibly Faster
July 4th, 2008 by ComputerBob
A few weeks ago, I began to notice my Firefox (Iceweasel) web browser slowing down. At first, it was just a little slower than normal, but over time, the problem got worse.
Much worse.
For the past several days, it was so bad that every time I’d visit a new web site, switch to a different browser tab, or even refresh a web page that I was viewing, I had to wait several seconds before Firefox would even START to load the page. Then it would take up to another several seconds for the page to finish loading.
Knowing that some versions of Firefox have memory leaks that can slow them down if you leave them open for long periods of time, I tried closing Firefox (Iceweasel) and then reopening it.
That didn’t help.
So I emptied the browser cache.
That didn’t help either.
Knowing that increasing the size of the Firefox cache can sometimes help speed it up, I increased it from the default 50 MB to 100 MB.
That still didn’t help.
Finally, last night, I spent about 30 minutes creating and organizing bookmarks for all of the web sites that I’ve collected over the past few weeks — web sites that have valuable information that I’ll need if a new potential web design client decides to hire me.
Then I closed all of the open browser tabs that those sites had been sitting in.
All 60 of them.
And Firefox (Iceweasel) immediately began to respond instantly again.
I can’t believe I didn’t think of that sooner.
