Helping Victims Become Survivors 3

September 7th, 2008 by ComputerBob

My community is lucky enough to have several charitable organizations that provide valuable services to disadvantaged people. A few of those services are a domestic violence emergency shelter that houses victims (and their children) who are in crisis, and an apartment-style shelter for homeless families. As a survivor of domestic violence, I felt led to begin doing volunteer work for one of those organizations about a month ago. Then, several days ago, I earned a state certification that qualifies me to work directly with domestic abuse victims, and now I’m being trained to help them as a legal advocate.

There’s a very good chance that your community has one or more organizations like that. If so, then I urge you to look into your heart and see if you have any time that you can give as a volunteer. Even a couple of hours every week can make a big difference. No matter what your skill level, there are things that you can do to help.

But even If you’re not be in a position to volunteer your time, there are many items that all such organizations constantly need, so maybe you could donate some of them.

Here’s the “Needs List” from the organization that I’m helping. I bet that your local organization has a very similar list:

  • Volunteers
  • Baby Food
  • Diapers
  • Personal Hygiene Items
  • Housekeeping Supplies
  • Linens
  • Towels
  • Educational Supplies
  • Vehicles
  • Backpacks
  • Furniture
  • Security Monitoring

And don’t forget, they also need financial donations.

Please remember that whether it’s time, money or needed items, your contribution can help change someone’s world for the better.
