Have We Lost The Privacy War? 4
March 20th, 2010 by ComputerBob
For years, I’ve railed against free online services that tempt users into trading their data’s privacy and security, as well as their personal privacy, for a little bit of convenience.
Google’s Buzz, Facebook, MySpace and others make hundreds of billions of dollars every year by finding more and more ways to exploit the private data that millions of users entrust to them.
Personally, I don’t use any “social networking” sites. This Web site is my social network, and it provides me with plenty of readers to correspond with by email.
However, I know that most people don’t have the knowledge, skill or motivation to create their own Web site — which I think is the main reason why social networking sites are so popular.
But what if even the least knowledgeable computer users could enjoy all of the benefits of today’s centralized social networking sites, without having to let any centralized provider spy on them and exploit their private data?
Here’s a guy with whom I can agree — and he has what I think is a tremendous idea for the future of social networking and “the cloud.”
