Google Public DNS

December 4th, 2009 by ComputerBob

If you don’t understand the title of this post, then don’t worry about it — You don’t have to know anything about DNS in order to use the Internet, so feel free to skip this post.

But if you’re geeky enough to understand the title of this post, then you probably know what DNS is.

You may even have configured your computer to use alternate DNS servers instead of the ones that your ISP provides, like the free OpenDNS servers that I’ve been very happily using since March of 2007.

But now you have a new option: Google has introduced its own free DNS service, called Google Public DNS.

I will not use Google Public DNS.

Google is an advertising company that makes money by collecting and exploiting its users’ personal and private data. That makes Google exactly the kind of company that I will not trust with the ability to track every single thing that I do on the Internet.

I think the founder of OpenDNS does a good job of describing how I feel in his blog. (Thanks to MALsPa for sending me a link to it.)
