Google Not So Private

March 11th, 2009 by ComputerBob

Regular readers of this Journal know that I don’t want to trust any online services with my private and confidential data. Thats the main reason that I probably won’t ever use GMail or any of the Google Apps. I just prefer to store my documents and email messages right on my own computer, thank you.

Anyone who reads this Journal is savvy enough to have seen plenty of examples of onine services being unreachable for hours at a time, and losing their customers’ data and failing to secure their customers’ private and confidential data from cybercriminals.

Still, many people ignore the mounting evidence, continue to trust their data to online services, and accuse people like me of being paranoid.

Once again, because I try to be a peaceful guy, I’m not going to say “I told you so,” but here is yet another example of why I feel the way I do: “Google has confirmed that a software bug exposed documents thought to be privately stored in the Internet giant’s online Docs application service. “

As opposed to Google’s recent Gmail outage that affected 113 million users around the world, this latest problem reportedly only affected a small percentage of users.

So it’s no big deal.

Nothing to worry about.

You were lucky.

This time.

Unless you happen to be one of the users whose private documents were suddenly not so private.

If you feel that the risk from using online services is worth it to you, then good luck, but, if you think about it, it’s really kind of silly to call me paranoid just because I’m not willing to play Russian roulette with my data.
