Getting Another Chance At Life

It’s a slow day in the field of tech news, so I went looking for answers to one of life’s persistent questions.
Why is it that no matter how many times a rich person, celebrity, or sports figure commits a serious crime, the U.S. legal system almost always gives them another “opportunity to turn their life around;” and a few months later, they happily announce their triumphal return to making money, attending fabulous parties, or hitting, throwing, catching or otherwise professionally playing with some type of ball — but when a “normal person” commits the exact same crimes, they are sentenced to prison, branded a criminal, and rarely recover anything resembling their “normal” life?
I don’t have the full answer yet, but today’s research leads me to suspect that it has something to do with cheese.
