For Eyes 4
August 31st, 2008 by ComputerBob
Yesterday, I went back to JC Penneys to pick up that store’s third attempt at making my new glasses with progressive lenses.
One of my eyes is slightly higher than the other. Even worse, my “high eye’s” ear is slightly lower than my other ear. You’d never notice either of those things if I didn’t tell you, but they both affect exactly where my eyes look through each of the lenses of my glasses. So the manager of the optical department spent some time custom-fitting my new frames to my face — a task that doesn’t matter much with single-vision lenses, but which is critically important to the success of progressive lenses.
After many small adjustments, everything was fine. The “near” prescription is stronger than it was in my old glasses, but unlike what had happened with Penneys’ first two attempts at making my new glasses, I could tell that my eyes — or more correctly, my brain — had already started to adjust to the difference within just a few minutes.
I like my new glasses.
But if I had known a month ago what I know now, I would have saved myself a lot of time, trouble and money and just kept wearing my old glasses, even though they weren’t quite strong enough to let me read small print up close.
