Emergency Contact Information

Have you ever been seriously injured in an automobile accident, or known someone who has?
You may not be aware of this, but sometimes, it can take several hours for police and medical professionals to find a relative or other loved one of the injured person, to notify them of the accident, or to get their permission to perform important medical tests or procedures.
Such a delay could mean the difference between life and death for an injured person — or the difference between dying with their loved ones nearby and dying alone.
Yesterday afternoon, I received an email from a close friend, telling me about The State of Florida’s Emergency Contact Information web site.
It allows every Floridian with a Drivers Licenses or a Florida Identification Card to register up to 2 emergency contacts, with their names, addresses and up to 3 telephone numbers apiece.
According to the web site, “This service will allow you to provide emergency contact information to law enforcement in the event of an emergency. This information may save crucial time if ever it becomes necessary to contact family members, or other loved ones. This service is only available to individuals holding a current Florida Driver License or Florida Identification Card.”
Then, if a registered person ever gets seriously injured in an accident, law enforcement — and only law enforcement — can quickly look up the person’s emergency contact(s).
I think it’s a great idea that’s going to save a lot of lives.
If you live in Florida, be sure to register right away. It only takes a minute or two. My wife and I are both registered now.
If you don’t live in Florida, be sure to contact your state’s Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles department, to find out if your state has a similar program.
