Do We Need a New Internet?

February 16th, 2009 by ComputerBob

I’ve seen articles that compare the Internet to the “wild west” years of the U.S.

It seems like there are way too many “bad guys” getting away with doing whatever they want, with way too few — or at least way too few effective — “good guys” protecting the good citizens.

So what’s the answer?

A writer in the New York Times suggests the possibility of scrapping the current Internet in favor of a new one that would require users to trade their anonymity and freedom in return for safety.

Many would argue that, since the 9/11 airplane disasters, U.S. citizens have already traded a lot of their anonymity and freedom in their daily lives in return for the promise — or maybe an illusion — of safety.

As always, Slashdot’s readers have a lot to say about the subject.

What do you think?
