Diaspora Is On Schedule

July 3rd, 2010 by ComputerBob

Personally, I have no interest in “social networking” sites. My Web sites give me plenty of opportunity to express myelf, and I have enough in-person, over-the-phone, and email friends that I’m not looking for more.

But I can understand how a lot of people who either don’t know how to — or don’t want to have to — create and maintain their own Web sites, would be drawn to online services like Facebook and Myspace.

Unfortunately, we’ve all seen many examples of how those types of services often violate their users’ privacy and security by suddenly and unilaterally making their users’ previously “private” information public.

Diaspora’s goal is to to provide a free and open-source, decentralized, secure social networking alternative to Facebook.

I think that’s a wonderful goal, and I wish Disapora’s developers well and hope that they are very successful.

Here’s what Slashdot’s readers are saying about Diaspora.
