Craigslist Deals 2
September 8th, 2009 by ComputerBob
Several days ago, I told you about a couple of great deals that I got from Craigslist.
This morning, I got another one.
When I built my main PC 6-7 years ago, the best price point for CPUs was an AMD Athlon XP 2100+. So that’s what I installed, along with a 3rd-party CPU heatsink whose big fan was manually adjustable.
Both that CPU and heatsink have always done their jobs, but the heatsink’s fan was always pretty intrusive, even when “dialed down” to its lowest speed.
So, for the past few months, I’ve wondered if I could replace that heatsink with a quieter, stock one. The only problem is that hardly anyone sells them any more, and with shipping, I’d have to pay $25-30 for one.
But last night, I found a much better local deal on Craigslist, and this morning, I closed that deal.
Instead of buying just an OEM heatsink for $30, I got an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ CPU and its OEM heatsink for only $10.
As soon as I got home, I found my old tube of Arctic Silver thermal compound and carefully installed my new purchases.
In fact, I’ve been using my PC with them installed for the past 90 minutes.
Of course, the 2400+ CPU isn’t noticeably faster than the 2100+ was, but the OEM heatsink is whisper-quiet compared to the heatsink that it just replaced.
And that’s very cool (pun intended).
