Conficker’s New Power

April 4th, 2009 by ComputerBob

By now, most computer users know that, three days ago, the Windows Conficker Worm received an upgrade, designed to strengthen its ability to wreak havoc on Windows computers all over the world.

But that day’s news reports mostly reassured Windows users that the new, updated Conficker didn’t appear to be doing any damage.

Millions of Windows users breathed a sigh of relief that day.

But anyone who understands a little bit about how computer worms work didn’t expect Conficker to demonstrate its new abilities on the same day that it received its update.

We know that Conficker’s creators aren’t trying to win one short-term battle — they want to win the entire long-term war.

So, instead of being fooled into having a false sense of security, anyone who still uses Windows would be wise to learn How the Conficker Problem Just Got Much Worse.

And anyone who uses Linux instead of Windows can relax because Conficker — like hundreds of thousands of other computer worms, viruses, trojans and various other assorted malwares — only affects Windows PCs.
