Circuit City Shenanigans

February 28th, 2009 by ComputerBob

A month ago, I was in the market for a new DSL modem/router. One night, I went to 5 or 6 different tech stores, looking for the best price I could find on the particular model that I wanted.

When I saw Circuit City’s huge “Going Out Of Business! Up To 70% Off!” banners, I knew that whether or not they carried exactly what I was looking for, they would undoubtedly have a whole lot of other cool tech stuff that I might want to buy — at a huge discount.

I spent almost 20 minutes in that store, and saw several things that I would have liked to buy, but I never found anything that I thought was even reasonably priced, let alone deeply-discounted.

Every price tag looked like it had been artificially inflated to a ridiculously high price so that it could be “discounted” back down to what looked to me to be “normal” Circuit City prices.

In other words, I didn’t see any discounts at all, despite what the store’s huge banners claimed.

I left in disgust, muttering, “Good riddance, Circuit City’!” — angry that I had let myself be tricked into wasted any time at all at that store.

Like I said, that was a month ago.

An intelligent person might think that as Circuit City gets closer and closer to closing its doors, it would lower its prices as much as possible, to try to sell as much of its aging merchandise as possible.

But if you’re an intelligent person, you’re not in Circuit City’s target audience, as evidenced by Last Days Of Circuit City: Lousy Bargains, Rumpled Salespeople.
