Christmas 2009

Merry Christmas!
Way back when I was a kid, only a few people complained every year that Christmas was becoming too commercialized.
But over the years, more and more people joined that chorus.
Then, at some point, the commercialism of Christmas reached a tipping point.
Because now people no longer complain that Christmas is becoming too commercialized — they complain that Christmas is too commercialized.
How did the sacred celebration of Christmas become corrupted into being the biggest, most expensive secular party of the year?
Ironically, it’s the fault of those who call themselves “Christians.”
Here’s a better explanation — and a challenge — in a song that I wrote in 1988:
Christmas Song
They tell me this is Christmas; these presents and this tree.
I wonder if they wonder what Christmas means to me.
The lights and decorations are such a sight to see.
I wonder if they wonder what Christmas means to me.
Jesus, tell them it was You who made it all possible.
Tell them that it’s true.
Jesus, I guess we’re all to blame.
I almost forgot to say I’m really glad you came.
They tell me baby Jesus was born in poverty.
I wonder if they wonder what Jesus means to me.
The statues in the churches are such a sight to see.
I wonder if they wonder what Jesus means to me.
Jesus, tell them it was You who made it all possible.
Tell them that it’s true.
Jesus, I guess we’re all to blame.
I almost forgot to say I’m really glad you came.
The gift I want for Christmas is faith, so I can be
so strong that I can tell them what Christmas means to me.
The glow on Christian faces is such a sight to see.
I wonder if they wonder what Jesus means to me.
Jesus, tell them it was You who made it all possible.
Tell them that it’s true.
Jesus, I guess we’re all to blame.
I almost forgot to say I’m really glad you came.
I’m really glad you came.
